English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)

Purpose:

ESOL services at the Pan American School are provided to students in grades K-8 who do not meet the minimum performance standard in English on the assessment conducted by school personnel. The assessment is based on the grade level in which the student is enrolled or the grade to which enrollment is sought, as appropriate. All new students who are non-native speakers of English, regardless of grade level, are assessed.

Students in Grades K-8:

The following services are provided for students designated as receiving ESOL support.

A. Initial and ongoing assessment of English by a qualified ESOL teacher.

B. Observations in class and school to assess use and competency in everyday English.

C. Support to the student and the student’s teacher to meet the academic needs of the student served through ESOL.

D. Individual or small group tutoring with the ESOL teacher for up to three periods a week (or the equivalent).

Students in Grades 9-12:

High school students are expected to have proficiency in English appropriate to their grade level, as measured by the assessment given at the school. Students who do not have proficiency, if admitted, should plan to seek tutorial services outside of school. We generally recommend that this supplementary tutoring in English be done at least three (3) days a week.

Portuguese for Speakers of Other Languages (PSOL)

All student non-native speakers are required to study Portuguese language, either through the PSOL program or, if language skills are proficient, within a regular Portuguese classroom. Students in the PSOL program gradually acclimate to their new environment and begin to acquire basic vocabulary designed to help them sustain simple conversations. Once students develop adequate skills in reading, writing, listening and speaking, they move into a transitional PSOL program with greater emphasis on grammatical structure and literature. Non-native speakers may eventually study the Portuguese language along with native speakers in a regular classroom.
